Master plan for the water supply of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

The water supply for the emirate of Abu Dhabi is based to a large extent on desalinated sea water; only a small part is obtained from groundwater. The rapid development of the emirate led to a continuing increase in the demand for water.

Thus, TRANSCO (Abu Dhabi Transmission & Despatch Company), the operator of the Abu Dhabi water transmission system, commissioned ILF in August 2009 to elaborate a master plan for the entire water grid. This study encompasses the existing network as well as the planned upgrades until the year 2030. The production, transport and storage of water are to be optimised to guarantee a sustainable and safe water supply.
