Bosruck Tunnel Breakthrough
| | ![]() |
On 11 Aug 2011 the final breakthrough of the second tube of the Bosruck tunnel took place in an official ceremony after a construction period of only 17 months. The excavation was effected under the most difficult geological conditions both from the north and the south, with a maximum overburden thickness of some 1200 m. The approx. 5.5-km road tunnel is part of the A9 Pyhrn motorway and links the Austrian provinces of Upper Austria and Styria.
Since opening the two-way road tunnel to traffic in 1983, rehabilitation works were required in the existing tunnel various times due to the severely squeezing rock. The construction of the second tunnel tube will, above all, increase tunnel safety and the transport capacity of this bottleneck on the A9. After the completion of the second tube, an overall
refurbishment of the first tube will be carried out, and it shall include
control buildings and tunnel equipment. The works for the Bosruck tunnel are expected to be completed in 2015.
In its capacity as lead designer (in partnership with Laabmayr & Partner), ILF is in charge of the entire construction engineering and E+M equipment for this project commissioned by ASFINAG.
