On 25 June 2012 the second tube of the Pfänder tunnel on the A14 Rheintal motorway in Bregenz (Austria) was officially opened to traffic. The approx. 7 km long motorway tunnel complies with the latest technical standards and most stringent safety requirements. The tunnel that will be a twin-bore system in the final stage is meant to help overcome the existing capacity bottlenecks and increase tunnel safety by separating two-way traffic.

The Pfänder Tunnel was excavated by means of a TBM having a diameter of approx. 12 m. On behalf of ASFINAG, ILF Consulting Engineers was responsible for the design of the second tube. The first tunnel tube, which is currently being refurbished, was also designed by ILF in the period 1973-1980, and ILF was furthermore responsible for the site supervision.
