GMMR Phase IV: Start of Pipe Laying

Laying of the first pipe

Phase IV of the Great Man Made River Project (GMMR) in Libya is at present one of the largest water-transmission projects in the world. The Ghadames-Zwara-Az Zawiyah-Water-System is intended to transport water from a well field at Ghadames to the coast, parallel to the Tunisian boarder line. The project involves, apart from the well field and water treatment facilities, a main 426-km pipeline, about 195 km transmission lines as well as four pumping stations.

In September 2006, the first pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipes with a diameter DN 1600, reached the construction site. Due to their high weight the laying of the pipes requires special equipment and expertise.

By order of Al Nahr Co. (ANC) ILF is responsible general designer for this challenging project.
