The new southern parallel runway was rotated by about 20 and built parallel to the northern runway with a separation of 2.100 m. The runway is 3.600 long and 60 m wide and is dimensioned for aircraft up to and including the Airbus A380. The whole airfield system includes parallel taxiways, exit and rapid exit taxiways and a new apron (52 ha) with a total area of 1.200.00 m ². The airfield pavements are constructed in 40 cm pavement quality concrete and are capable of withstanding all current aircraft operations without restrictions. The new technical equipment for unrestricted flight operations includes airfield lighting, navigational aids, signing, floodlighting, docking guidance, 400 Hz-supply and power supply.
A special requirement of the planning permission, namely to achieve an earthworks balance within the confines of the site, proved to be a particular logistic challenge. As a result, the 5.000.000 m³ of earthworks was split into a number of construction stages. The entire construction phase was carried out within 2 years with completion on the 30th June 2007. The highlight of the official opening was a parallel landing by a DHL Boeing 757 and a Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 to inaugurate the parallel runway system.
The new airside facilities provide the Leipzig/Halle Airport Authority and its new client DHL, who will establish its new cargo hub for Europe here, with a state-of-the-art runway system and 56 apron aircraft stands which will enable the peak hour capacities which are required by the industry.
airport consulting partners carried out all stages of the airfield design from the preliminary and detailed design, the planning application, the final design, the tender evaluation and the contract award for 41 separate contracts. The services for the technical equipment also included the site supervision and commissioning.
