Construction of a single-track railway line along the Karakoram Highway between Havelian and the Sino-Pakistani border. Similar to the historic Silk Road, this railway is to establish a link between the Western and the Eastern countries of the Eurasian continent, thus providing China and the Central Asian countries with a direct access to the Persian Gulf.

The railway line crosses the highest mountain ranges in the world: the Himalayas, the Karakoram, the Hindu Kush and the Pamir Mountains. The apex (3,650 m.a.s.l) of the 24.6-km long base tunnel is situated underneath the 4,790-m high Mintaka Pass.  The highly difficult topographical, geological and geotechnical tasks required special approaches in order to find a technically and financially feasible alignment.
