The relocation of the B 23 federal road west of Garmisch-Partenkirchen into the Kramertunnel is to provide traffic relief to the town of Garmisch which suffers from heavy transit. Important for the study of alternatives were the surrounding protection areas (Habitats Directive, natural and landscape protection, etc) and the special conditions for the routing in the areas used by the US military. The two access points play a significant role when it comes to sufficiently relieving traffic.
Therefore, a partial cloverleaf interchange with approach ramps to the existing federal road, to a roundabout, to a crossover structure and to a watertight concrete structure will be built. An at-grade intersection with a roundabout and two new bridges crossing the Loisach river constitutes the connection to the existing B 23 federal road in the south. In the course of the relocation of the B 23 federal road, municipal roads and public field and forest tracks have to be adapted; the relocation of the Loisach river is also necessary.
