Design and consulting services for the Coya hydropower plant.

The Coya hydropower plant is situated some 90 km south of Santiago and was built in 1911. Initially, it was built for the operation of the nearby El Teniente copper mine, the world's largest copper mine.

The existing plant has a weir with a water intake of 22.5 m³/s, a 12-km long headrace canal and the penstock to the powerhouse with four steel pipelines laid above ground. The power house is situated on the Cachapoal River, in a very tight location, opposite the town of Coya.

The planned modernisation of the power plant includes rehabilitation and capacity increase from 39.9 to 103.1 MW, without any change of head. This necessitates the construction of a new weir with a water intake of 70 m³/s, new desanders, additional parallel canals and/or extension of existing canals and new tunnels. Furthermore, an artificial daily storage reservoir with a usable volume of 1 million m³ shall make it possible to generate peak electricity.
