The Deutsche Bahn AG commissioned ILF to perform the construction supervision for the structural works of the tunnel in the project section 1.2 and 1.6a of the Stuttgart 21 project. The project comprises the overall reorganization of the Stuttgart train station. In the course of this project as well as with the new construction of the Wendlingen - Ulm railway line, the short and long distance railway connections are increased to a large extent, and the journey times are shortened.
The sections comprise the centre piece of the complex inner urban construction project: both 9.5 km long tubes of the Filder tunnel connecting the main train station with the new train station at the airport/ exhibition centre as well as both 6 km long tunnel tubes to Obertürkheim and Untertürkheim passing under the Neckar river. The mined tunnels are situated in geologically very complex subsoil with partly low overburden in the inner urban settlement area.
