New Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel breakthrough
The breakthrough of the New Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel was celebrated on 7 November 2011 in Cochem after a construction time of approx. 18 months.
With an overall investment of 200 million euros and a length of 4,242 m the New Kaiser Wilhelm railway tunnel is one of the most important and modern infrastructure projects in Germany. In 2015 the Koblenz-Trier railway line along the river Mosel will go back to being a twin-track line with now two separate tubes thanks to the new construction of the second tube and the refurbishment of the Old Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel.
On behalf of Deutsche Bahn AG, ILF Consulting Engineers has been responsible for the entire design (preliminary design, concept, permit application process, tender and detailed design) for the “New” and the “Old” Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel since 2001.
