Energy Storage

The progressive cost reduction of renewable energy technologies has created an unstoppable growth in the demand for Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) at a global level. The intermittent nature of RESs, however, causes network planning and network stability issues for energy system operators. To overcome these issues, new energy storage facilities are required.

Today, a variety of different technologies, such as mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrochemical, and electrical storage systems, are being further developed and are already competing on the short‑, medium- and long-term energy storage device markets.

While Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) still constitutes a 95 % share of the currently installed storage capacity, electrical, electrochemical and mechanical technologies, which cover different storage durations and frequencies of power supply, are experiencing rapid growth and consequently a drop in price. Having a wealth of impressive references gathered over two decades, ILF is among the key players on the pumped hydro storage market, as well as in the emerging technologies market, where ILF uses its vast experience in handling gases and power generation applications.

ILF is involved in the largest Li-Ion battery project to date for frequency regulation, demand shifting and peak shaving, as well as in the planning of an advanced power-to-hydrogen facility. ILF offers the complete package of engineering services, from the early stages of project appraisal, selection of the optimal solution, to project execution.

ILF also has experience in developing technologies such as gravity storage and liquid air energy storage. ILF renders all the services required for the successful implementation of energy storage projects.
