WHAT WE DO

WHAT WE DO

Geotechnical engineering is an independent, interdisciplinary field of civil engineering. When- and wherever construction takes place on, in or in connection with the subsoil, geotechnical engineering comes into play.

Geotechnical engineering is divided into the theoretical part – soil and rock mechanics – which deals with the behavior of soil and rock, and the practical part – foundation and rock engineering – which deals with the application of geotechnics in civil engineering. Geotechnical calculations serve to prove that a planned structure has dimensions that are sufficient to enable the structure to interact with the subsoil and with groundwater. This way, it can, for example, be proved (through such geotechnical calculations), that a slope is not too steep and/or too high, that a retaining structure can absorb all acting loads, that a tunnel is stable and that a structure will not topple over, sink, slide away, slip or shrink/swell.

The spectrum of geotechnical calculations ranges from simple analytical settlement and stability calculations to complex three-dimensional numerical calculation procedures using specialized finite element models.

The Geotechnical Engineering department offers a comprehensive range of geotechnical design and consultancy services as part of interdisciplinary overall planning procedures. These services are offered in all phases of projects, ranging in size from small to large-scale, and are based on a combination of sound scientific research and practical experience. The aim is to provide reliable and efficient structural solutions in accordance with current technical, environmental and regulatory standards.

OUR TEAM

WHO YOU’LL BE WORKING WITH

The Geotechnical Engineering department is currently made up of 18 Technical Experts, who have a high level of professional competence and different specializations, having being educated at a number of universities in a variety of different countries. Continuous professional development is achieved through lively internal exchange and close cooperation with both science and practical application.

I would describe us as being professionally competent, culturally diverse, and small but excellent.

“Based on the excellent expertise of my team members, we are in a position to develop innovative ideas and solve geotechnical problems and challenges – even if we sometimes have to use unusual ways to do so. What I particularly appreciate about my team is that we have managed to create a positive working atmosphere by acting in an open, humorous and above all respectful manner towards each other.”

MEET YOUR COLLEAGUES

“I find the space for personal and professional development within our department and the company particularly valuable. I especially benefit from the exchange with colleagues, both on a personal and a technical level. I also find the mix of different cultural backgrounds in our team enriching, as this creates a working atmosphere in which we all feel comfortable to share our different opinions, ideas and suggestions.”

Iman B.

Senior Expert – Geotechnical Engineering

“The family-like atmosphere and positive mood within our team, the internal appreciation we receive for the work we do and the fair division of tasks mean a lot to me. Every one of us has the opportunity to work independently on projects, and to grow as a person and develop our skills whilst doing so. On top of this, we also always have the support of our Department Manager.”

Engineer – Geotechnical Engineering

“I can say with great gratitude that I am surrounded every day by people who are more than just work colleagues to me. We attach utmost importance to fostering a great team spirit and to helping out each and every member of our team. Activities such as our weekly departmental lunch, wide-ranging discussions during coffee breaks, and the annual dinner held at our Department Manager’s house in an informal atmosphere strengthen the close relationships within our team.”

Project Manager

“For me, professional success means not only client satisfaction and achieving positive financial results upon completion of projects, but also the fact that I can work together with reliable colleagues in a stable and consistent team. Since joining ILF in 2006, I have gained a lot of experience working on some very challenging infrastructure projects – both in the technical and commercial handling of projects and in the project-specific handling within the internal and external teams with which I have worked.”
