Railway Tunnel Ventilation Systems

Tun­nel ven­ti­la­ti­on sys­tems of rail­way lines are pri­mar­ly used to pro­vi­de safe evacua­ti­on con­di­ti­ons for fle­eing peop­le in case of fire. They ser­ve to trans­port toxic gases, smo­ke and heat out of the walk­ways and tunnels. 

Under nor­mal ope­ra­ting con­di­ti­ons, the pis­ton effect of moving trains in tun­nels is used to pro­vi­de fresh air to the tun­nel sys­tem. Moving trains in tun­nels pro­du­ce pres­su­re waves which pro­pa­ga­tes through the tun­nel at sonic speed. The pres­su­re waves affect the tech­ni­cal equip­ment insi­de the tun­nel. The­re­fo­re, the design of the tech­ni­cal equip­ment needs to con­si­der the load of the simu­la­ted pres­su­re waves.

Hence, inves­ti­ga­ting the air move­ment cau­sed by trains is essen­ti­al for a pro­per design pro­cess in modern rail­way tunnels.
